When the U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it would remove Nexium from the market in July, it was clearly an act of greed. The agency didn’t even ask the Food and Drug Administration to approve a version of the drug for a longer duration, but the company responded by offering a new product to a patient who had had an allergic reaction to the drug.
“It was obvious to all of our patients and doctors that these products had serious health risks,” says Steve Fishman, the director of the Center for Food Safety at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He says that for more than half a year, the agency had been investigating the safety and efficacy of a new drug designed to treat heartburn and acid reflux. “It was just a huge amount of money and a lot of time, and the FDA didn’t see it that way.”
In July, the FDA announced that it would remove from the market Nexium from the U. market by July 24, 2017. That means that Nexium has been prescribed for patients who are experiencing heartburn that requires a long-term management plan.
There are, however, many different reasons that patients will benefit from the switch. They also have a variety of other medical conditions, like diabetes and high blood pressure. For example, the FDA said that some patients with heartburn who had been given the drug for a short time “have a significant increased risk of developing high blood pressure.”
Nexium is an over-the-counter medication designed to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach in adults, a condition that requires a long-term management plan. The drug, which is available for patients over the age of 18, is a combination of two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, naproxen and ibuprofen, and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac.
In other words, if you’re taking a drug to relieve your acid reflux, it can also reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. The FDA did not say how much of this drug was used, but it had recommended that patients use it for a long time, even if they had not had heartburn or acid reflux.
“I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that this drug was very effective,” Fishman says. “The FDA was concerned that the drug might cause ulcers and bleeding in the stomach. That’s why we changed the labeling, so the FDA could find out if the drug was safe to take.”
The FDA has also noted that the drug is not known to be safe to take with other medications like antibiotics or pain relievers. In addition, some patients are taking certain drugs, such as rifabutin and naproxen, for conditions like arthritis and menstrual cramps. When you take a medication that can affect the brain or liver, doctors have to be careful.
But that doesn’t mean that they can’t be sure that you’re taking the right drug for you.
“There are lots of other things that can interact with a certain drug that you’re taking,” Fishman says. “Some of these interactions include heartburn, some of the interactions between heartburn medications and pain relief drugs, and some of the interactions between diabetes medications and antidepressants.”
The FDA has also done its own work to help people take medications like Nexium and Diclofenac. In May, the agency announced that it would discontinue the sale of Nexium to patients who have a history of stomach bleeding, as well as a recent case where a patient who was prescribed the drug was not able to get the medication off the market because of the risk of stomach ulcers.
“These are very serious and dangerous conditions that the FDA is making a drug for, and the FDA is also making a drug for a patient to treat stomach ulcers,” Fishman says. “It’s not a drug that the FDA has to approve, but we’re going to give it time to see what it has to do with the new product.”
The FDA has also been involved in some of the other drug switches that were made to Nexium. For example, in August, the FDA announced that it was removing a third of Nexium from the market. The agency said that it wanted to make a switch that would allow for more aggressive marketing, rather than just giving the drug away. And, of course, in April, the FDA announced that it would stop using Nexium in children.
